Kloster Schussenried

Aerial view of Bad Schussenried Monastery

The Premonstratensian monastery of Schussenried lies in the midst of the Baroque countryside of Upper Swabia.
The monastery, large parts of which were burned down in the Thirty Years' War, was rebuilt by the master builder Jakob Emele under Abbot Magnus Kleber from the middle of the 18th century.
In 1875 it became the seat of psychiatric institution. Today the complex serves as an "Akademie- und Dienstleistungszentrum" (Academy and Service Center).  Part of the building still houses the "Center for Psychiatry (Zentrum für Psychiatrie) in Bad Schussenried.  Art exhibitions and other cultural events take place in the rooms of the New Monastery (Neues Kloster).

The main attractions of the former monastery include the magnificently carved Baroque choir stalls of the parish church St. Magnus and the light-flooded Rococo library hall (Bibliothekssaal) in the northern New Convent Building (Konventsneubau). As an optimum introduction to the monastery visit, visitors are provided with all important information on the monastery's history in historical rooms directly next to the cash register area.

The Library Hall is located in the center projection of the North Wing of the New Monastery, erected between 1752 and 1763. It is based on drafts by Dominikus Zimmermann and was executed under Abbot Nikolas Kloos (1756 - 1775) by the Bad Schussenried Monastery architect Jakob Emele between 1754 and 1761.
